MARTHA'S VINEYARD is an island off the southwestern coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Island is about 100 square miles 9 miles at its widest and 26 miles long this unique Island is a one-of-a kind. The year round residents are a strong willed group of about 15,000 residents and in the summer months the Island swells to a population of approximate 120,000 people!

This beloved Island was said to be discovered in 1602 by a British fisherman who named the Island after is firstborn daughter Martha and the thick vegetation calling it Martha’s Vineyard.

The Island is generally triangular-shaped with its base the straight south shore, and northern points facing Cape Cod. The total land area is approximately 96 square miles with over 124 miles of picturesque shoreline.

The Island consists of 6 individual and distinctive towns. Each one has its own beauty charm and draw. They are Edgartown (and the island of Chappaquiddick), Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven (aka Tisbury), West Tisbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah.

Conservation is strong on Martha’s Vineyard and the Land Bank is helping to preserve our open lands as nearly 1/3 of the Island is protected land and will never be developed. Roughly 63% of the Island’s housing is second homes for seasonal residents. Day trippers make up an, and an additional 10,000 visitors coming and going on ferries, in private boats and via air travel every day mid-June through Labor Day.

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are perfect times to enjoy our beautiful Island without all the hustle and Bustle of the summer months, The Island hosts many festivals and most businesses offer lower pricing for lodging during the “off season”. The Holidays are a great time to getaway and enjoy the peaceful relaxation the Island has to offer during the “off-season” From June through September you can expect to find the ferry boats full.
